The past, preserved.
The Library of Alexandria was the largest and most famous library of the ancient world — a great hall gathering the writings of many peoples into one house of learning. Much of what it held is lost, and each generation has felt that loss in its own way.
Alexandria by ALTARED does not claim to replace what was burned. It gathers what survives — the historians who chronicled the Western, Hebrew, Christian, and Islamic traditions — and presents their lives and their words with the care of a good reading room.
The project belongs to a small family of ALTARED works dedicated to durable knowledge. If it helps a reader open the right book, it has done its work.
Content Integrity
- All reading text comes from public-domain translations, credited on the work page and at every chapter head.
- Quotes carry an attribution seal: verified, attributed, or otherwise. Unverified or misattributed quotes are never presented as if they were genuine.
- Uncertain dates preserve their c. marker; BCE and CE are always explicit.
- Fragmentary and lost works are labeled honestly; where a text is legendary rather than historical (as with Geoffrey of Monmouth), the description says so.
